Have a radio for the latest news

Without electricity, news and other information can be difficult to gather.  So have a battery operated radio handy for emergencies.  And of course, make sure to have extra batteries.  It’s also a good idea not to store the batteries inside of the radio, as corrosion may occur after time.

First Aid Kits

These are one of those items that hopefully you will never need, but can be invaluable, specially at at time of need like a natural disaster.  Be sure the kit includes medicines or any prescription drugs your family members take.

Have cash handy

Most people forget to withdraw extra cash in preparation for natural disasters.  This is a good practice because ATM’s and bank computer systems may be down.

How much food is enough?

Since you never know exactly how a natural disaster will affect you, it’s a good idea to be over prepared.  Just like water, you should have enough food for 3 to 7 days.  Also, consider the following:

  • Non-perishable packaged or canned food / juices
  • Foods for infants or the elderly
  • Snack foods
  • Non-electric can opener
  • Cooking tools / fuels
  • Paper plates / plastic utensils

Make sure to have plenty of water

Be sure to have enough water for any disaster.  A good rule of thumb is to have at least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days.
